Methodology
How did I do this?
Samoan election results are not provided in a simple format for easy data analysis. For 2021’s election results, I patched together data and information from various sources to produce a consolidated geographic picture of voting results for further analysis. Wherever possible, I used the Office of the Electoral Commission as the source.
Constituency maps were updated in 2019, and are sources from the Office of the Electoral Commission. I used georeferencing to convert these images into polygons. As this data has only been provided in image format, digitising the map will allow for future research to study the demographics within the polygons.
Electoral results were also from the Office of the Electoral Commission. Since the OEC only provides the results as a PDF without even readable text, digitising this data has been a positive step forward to researchers of Samoan democracy. The exceptions were Falaeta 3, Lepa and Lotofaga. These electorates had only one candidate and therefore no voting. I used DevPolicy’s data for the names of the candidates.
Party affiliation was not provided by the official OEC results paper, and was the most difficult to attain. As I am committed to using official sources wherever possible, I relied on the Samoa Electoral Commission’s Twitter (now X) page, which listed candidates next to their parties. The exception was Falaeta 3 – for which I used media articles Lotofaga – PIF source, and and Lepa – media articles.
