About
Pacific Votes is a personal project to digitise, visualise, and analyse data from elections in Pacific countries, increasing its visibility to voters and researchers.
The Goal
This project is still ongoing, with the goal of expanding to include more countries, historical data, and visualisations. Your feedback is welcomed.
Where Data is Sourced From
I am not affiliated with any electoral authorities, and you are encouraged to visit the official websites if you plan to make decisions based on this data.
Data is collected from official sources, primarily the country’s electoral authority, wherever possible. Some of this data is not machine-readable or in an easily analysable format, requiring extensive data transformation and cleaning. More than occassionally, it requires some creativity and innovation to automate data collection. My hope is that this work will benefit researchers who can utilise it for future projects. If you require raw data, please feel free to reach out.
Occasionally, I will rely on open source media reporting and academic publications where there are gaps in the official data. This will be well documented in the Methodology page, and every care is taken to corroborate and verify.
If you have access to any electoral data from Pacific countries and you are happy (and allowed) to share it for the website’s visualisations, please reach out.
About Me – Derrick Appel
I am a graduate from Politics, Philosophy and Economics (PPE), and have years of experience in data analysis and visualisation. I am passionate about elections and the global benefit of transparent elections with informed voters. This project is a way to use my technical skills to aid in keeping voters informed. I’m always up for a coffee (even virtually?) so please feel free to get in contact.
Future of the Project
I am actively working through the following:
Website
- Mobile-friendly version
Samoa
- Mapping polling booths and results in 2021. If you have any geocoded datasets on Samoan villages and churches please reach out, as I am currently doing this manually.
- Adding historical elections including pre-2021 elections and the various by-elections that have occurred since the general election.
- Samoan constituency profiles, allowing users to see swings and voting history.
- Party voting performance dashboard, allowing for comparison over time.
- Preparing a live feed for the 2026 election.
- Implementing analysis on overall trends and individual constituencies.
- Overlaying demographic data to allow for more in-depth analysis.
Other Countries
I plan to add all Pacific Island Countries, beginning with:
- Tonga
- Nauru
- Vanuatu
- Micronesia
- Fiji
- Cook Islands
- Niue
These nations will have elections soon or have recently had elections. Other countries will follow shortly after.
